KEY POINTS WHEN OBTAINING A CRIMINAL RECORD
OR ‘‘POLICE CHECK’’ IN AUSTRALIA
For most Visa applications, it is required to provide a criminal record or ‘Police check’ of the Applicant before the Department of Home Affairs gives a decision on the application result.
A criminal record or ‘Police check’ is a measure to see if the Applicant has the qualities to become an Australian citizen or not.
A police check usually has a validity of 12 months, so it should not be prepared too early as you might have to redo it in case the assessment process takes a long time. It is advisable to consult your migration agent for advice on the timing of preparation.
List all the names you have used in Australia, as the Department of Home Affairs may require to redo the police check if they detected that you have used a different name on any document you provide.
The current cost to obtain a Criminal Record or ‘Police check’ in Australia is AUD 56 (since 1/7/2024, but may change at the time you read this article).
